National Coalition Praises House Republicans for
Opposing Bush Plan
More than 500 America Says No! rallies have been registered
in forty-six states in the 24 hours since the Win Without War coalition
called on its members and allied groups to host local actions to
protest President Bushs widely anticipated call for the deployment
of more US combat troops in Iraq.
Yesterday, the coalition urged citizens to gather tomorrow night
after President Bushs address at local events and upload personal
YouTube appeals and photos calling on their member of Congress to
say No! to the Presidents new plan. It is the
first in a series of coordinated protest actions being planned for
January and February.
The response has been overwhelming in the first 24 hours
since the call was made, said Tom Andrews, National Director
of WWW and former Congressman from Maine. Event registrations
continue to pour in from throughout the country as we get closer
to the presidents prime-time address tonight. We have obviously
struck a raw nerve, he said.
The raw nerve of opposition is not confined to Democrats.
The coalition praised a group of Republican House members for circulating
and releasing an open letter to the president today that urges him
not to escalate the war.
We appreciate the principled stand that Congressman Walter
Jones and his Republican House colleagues are taking and their efforts
to prevent yet another disastrous decision from being made by this
administration. We are calling on our members who live in Congressional
Districts represented by Republicans to encourage their members
to support this bi-partisan effort to stop the escalation.
