Win Without War: Support U.S. Troops, Oppose Bush "First
Strike Doctrine"
Announces Worldwide Plan of Action — Vigils and "Citizens'
Declaration" to Galvanize World Public Opinion Against "Reckless
Use of Power"
Washington DC — At a press conference today, leaders of Win
Without War, America’s mainstream antiwar coalition, announced
their support for US troops while expressing their opposition to
the Bush Administration’s “reckless” use of the
country’s awesome military power in Iraq.
“We support our men and women in uniform. We hope and pray
for their safe return as we hope and pray for the innocent men,
women and children of Iraq. We remain opposed to the Bush ‘First
Strike Doctrine’ and the reckless use of this country’s
awesome military power. We are committed to burying this doctrine
in Iraq,” said former Congressman Tom Andrews, national director
of Win Without War.
“It is only through respect for our allies, international
law and the United Nations that we can hope to address our most
serious challenges including: terrorism, North Korea, the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict, the India-Pakistan conflict, Iran and other imminent threats
to world peace,” said Dr. Robert Edgar, General Secretary
of the National Council of Churches.
“This invasion has isolated our country and galvanized world
public opinion against our government at a time when we least afford
it. Unlike the first Gulf War where our allies paid for ninety percent
of the costs, Americans will now have to carry the full burden of
this unnecessary invasion and occupation by themselves,” said
Darcy Scott Martin, director of the Washington office of Women’s
Action for New Directions (WAND).
Win Without War also expressed support for allied organizations
that plan non-violent civil disobedience in opposition to the US
attack on Iraq. “Their actions are in the finest democratic
tradition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and those Americans who
opposed US support for South African apartheid,” said Andrews.
The coalition announced an internationally coordinated, three-pronged
plan of action:
- Support for US troops — An effort to generate national
opposition to the Bush administration’s proposal to slash
funding for veteran services; a call for members and supporters
to communicate directly with our men and women in uniform to express
our support. The coalition is urging its members to do so through
“Operation Dear Abby”.
- A call for worldwide candlelight vigils beginning at 7PM on
the day the invasion begins.
- Launch of a “Citizens’ Declaration” to express
the near unanimity of worldwide public opposition to a US led
invasion and occupation of Iraq and the Bush “First Strike
Doctrine.”
